Week 5

How is school influencing your life at or up to this point?

Wow, what a question! I love school and all the possibilities it's opening up for me!!! If I could afford it, I could quite happily become a professional college student...there are so many different things that I'd love to learn about!!! Though I confess, I'd love school even more if math wasn't a necessary part of it! I've discovered this term that I'm not as horrible with math as I thought I was but that doesn't mean I've discovered some hidden love for it!

Financially, being in school is tough. I got done working after my first term so I could take extra classes and finish my degree early which leaves my family surviving on a single income. I've offered to go back to work but my husband insists that the best thing for us in the long run is for me to focus on my studies and let him worry about the financial end of things until I graduate. There's a long story behind it, but it's very difficult for me to rely on someone else to "take care of me" in the financial sense and I'm glad that the end is in sight. The last day of my final term is less than a year away.

I think the area of my life where I'm noticing school having the biggest impact is with my kids. My daughter tells anyone and everyone who will listen that her mom is going to college and every time I have a big success, she reports it to her teacher and friends. My son, seeing the effort that I put in on a daily basis, is putting greater effort into his own studies. We've had some conversations about his upcoming high school years and the importance of college. He really seems to understand that he will be so much better off if he does well in his remaining years of school and goes to college after he graduates. He's in 7th grade and is already starting to consider what his best options are...online education compared to attending/living on campus, which career fields are growing and offer the most opportunity for advancement... I remind him sometimes when he gets a little too worried, that he's 12 and there is still time to make these decisions but I also answer his questions to the best of my ability and take the time to have these discussions.

  1. It is so awesome to see our children grow. Then to have them come to us with questions...that we can mostly answer, even better! :) I too could become a professional student. There is so much that I would love to learn. It just wouldn't be feasible. I'm loving what I do now, but after learning so much about the medical side of things, I'd really like to go further with it all. I may consider a bit more when and if I can land a job with what I currently going for! :)

My daughter is figuring out what she want's to do with her life. Reality is what she if finding right now. Knowing that it will cost her more to go to college out of state is a big deterrent for her. Knowing that she can consider online schooling is a real draw at this time. She is only 14, however in her mind she is planning on graduating by 16 and being done with college by 22. I've told her to slow it down....we'll see!

You seem to be on the right track. Keep it up!
